Should I avoid surgery in the summer?
With the start of June, the rainy season has begun in the Kanto region.
It is a humid and dreary season, but once the rainy season ends, summer will arrive.
Summer is my favorite of the four seasons with its swimming pools, watermelons, and oyster ice.
In recent years, global warming has made summer a moderately harsh season.
I take care of UV rays with sunscreen + parasol, but I have spots because of running....
Now, I've been doing some counseling this time of year.
Should I avoid surgery in the summer?"
In the summer, I worry about postoperative infections."
We will have more opportunities to ask the question "What is the best way to get the best results?
In conclusion, let me tell you.
It is a myth that surgery in the summer increases the infection rate!
I was asked the same question 20 years ago when I became a doctor, and even now that I am in 2021, I am sometimes asked the same question by younger patients as well as older ones, so it is a deep-rooted superstition.
Perhaps in the early Showa period, it was more likely to be infected in the summer.
But the environment then and today is very different.
The water supply and sewerage systems are underdeveloped, and people do not have the habit of showering, bathing, and washing their faces every day.
No air conditioning, even indoors.
They believed you should never wash a wound.
The quality of hygiene materials, such as drugs and gauze, was inferior.
Not in good nutritional condition.
Under these circumstances, it is possible that complications may have been more frequent in the summer months, for example, in abdominal laparotomies.
But, however, the situation is very different from the early Showa period, as rooms are now air-conditioned and wounds can be washed early in the postoperative period. Furthermore, the area around the face, which is the target of cosmetic surgery, has good blood flow and a lower infection rate than the abdomen or limbs.
So there is no need to worry about avoiding the surgery because it is summer time.
If I may venture to mention a word of caution during the summer months, it is to keep UV care to a minimum. This is because UV exposure to early scars can cause hyperpigmentation. But this should be taken care of even in winter.
I'm not talking about the infection rate,
Procedures that require postoperative compression, such as liposuction
Postoperative plaster casts are required for osteotomies of the nose, etc.
is there is one thing that is more comfortable if you avoid the summer months.
In the summer, wearing hats and sunglasses is not a bad idea, and pollen allergies are off-season.
If you are going to have surgery around the eye area, this may be more of an anteater season.
