Compared to conventional lasers, the pico laser can fragment pigment particles into smaller particles. The finely fragmented pigments are more easily metabolized and excreted, thus allowing for improvement in fewer treatment sessions.

Laser irradiation produces heat, which affects the surrounding tissues and causes pain. The longer the irradiation time, the more intense the heat, and therefore the greater the pain. The picolaser has a very short irradiation time of picoseconds, which means less heat damage, resulting in less pain and gentler treatment of the skin.
