What are mongolian folds?

Dr Kuroda

Hello.
I am Dr. Kuroda, aka Dr. K, Deputy Director.

The theme of this commemorative first column is "mongolian folds.
It reads "Moko hida".

What are mongolian folds?

Observe your own eyes in the mirror.
You have a fissure from the inside of the upper eyelid to the inner corner of the eye that covers the pink area of the eye.
This is the mongolian fold.
In case you are wondering, the pink area at the top of the eye is called the lachrymal papule.

What? I don't seem to have it.......
Rest assured. There is nothing abnormal.

About 80% of Japanese people have mongolian folds, but some do not.
So-called Westerners do not have mongolian folds.

About the size of the mongolian folds

Even those with mongolian folds vary in size and shape.
I will show you how to do this when evaluating whether your mongolian folds are large or small.

Now put a mirror down and take a selfie with the camera of your eyes with both eyes closed.
With the eyes closed, the mongolian folds look like vertical stripes at the top of the eye.
When this vertical stripe exceeds 5 mm, the mongolian folds look larger than average.

Characteristics of eyes with mongolian folds

  • Gentle impression
  • look young
  • Overdevelopment causes eyes to appear distant or small

Characteristics of eyes without mongolian folds

  • Beautiful face, crisp look.
  • It looks harsh to some people.
  • It looks like a centripetal or exotropic face.

There is no good or bad with or without the mongolian folds, but depending on the degree, the negative aspects may be noticeable.

summary

Now, why was the theme of the first commemorative issue the mongolian folds?
This is because knowing the mongolian folds is necessary to know which double folds suit you best.
An understanding of the mongolian fold is also necessary to explain craniotomy and mongolian fold formation.

We will explain this topic in the next issue.
Thank you for reading to the end.
